Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 1 Review

Review:

To be honest, I’ve only seen some of theĀ episodes from season one of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and wasn’t impressed. The show was a mid-season replacement and it was initially given a tiny budget. With just 12 episodes, it didn’t really have enough time to find its footing and it flailed around with mostly silly plots and absolutely terrible special effects for most of the season. If you want to watch Buffy but don’t want to sit through the whole season, start with these four episodes:

  • 1×01 Welcome to the Hellmouth
  • 1×02 The Harvest
  • 1×07 Angel
  • 1×12 Prophecy Girl

There are occasional callbacks to other season one episodes (especially 1×03 Witch) in the later seasons, but these four are the most important to the show’s overall arc.

Brave Movie Review

Review:

The first Pixar movie with a female protagonist, which is slightly depressing given that it’s also the 13th Pixar movie. At least it’s a fun, strong-minded, and memorable female protagonist!

Merida feels misunderstood by her proper and traditional mother, so she makes a wish that inadvertently turns her mother into a bear. Oops.

The quest to undo it is a rollicking good adventure with much for girls, boys, and their parents to enjoy. Beautiful animation as well, especially Merida’s amazing hair.

Review:

A tremendously fun comedy about not being deceived by appearances. Pretty, bubbly Elle Woods is a walking blonde joke… until her college sweetheart breaks up with her and she decides to win him back by following him to Harvard Law School.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Movie Review

Review:

A tremendous amount of fun, thanks mainly to the iconic performance of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and the twisty, turny plot, which manages to keep you guessing until the end exactly how it will play out.

Bend It Like Beckham Movie Review

Review:

Bend It Like Beckham became a pretty much instant feel-good classic when it was released and remains funny and charming more than 10 years later. It’s a great girl power film as well.

Review:

Though not quite as consistent as Book 2, Book 3 is a strong and satisfying conclusion to the series, with many excellent episodes and an especially strong character arc for Zuko.

My favorite season of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Starting with the introduction of Toph in episode six, “The Blind Bandit,” the show knocks it out of the park with a string of almost unbroken awesome until the season finale.

Along with Toph, who is tied with Iroh as my favorite character in the show, the season also introduces Zuko’s badass sister Azula and her equally badass friends Mai and Ty Lee as new antagonists, cementing Avatar’s position as one of the best depictions of strong, complex, and diverse female characters on television.

Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 1 Review

Review:

Avatar: The Last Airbender is not just one of the best children’s tv shows I’ve ever seen, it’s one of the best tv shows, period. The worldbuilding and character development are amazing, the animation quality is good (and sometimes outstanding), and there’s an enjoyable blend of action, humor, adventure, and more.

I do consider Book One to be the weakest season overall, but it’s still highly enjoyable, for the whole family.

Mulan

Review:

The single best Disney movie to show to girls (and boys), in my opinion.

Although Disney has gotten much better at presenting well-rounded and interesting heroines in recent years, many Disney movies still focus ultimately on romance. In Mulan, by contrast, the romance is a minor and understated subplot, and the focus is squarely on Mulan’s quest to save her father’s life and bring honor to her family. Along the way, her cleverness, resourcefulness, and quick thinking save China as well.

In addition to providing a great role model, Mulan also has some great songs, lots of action and humor, and lovely animation. A must-have for any family video collection.
