Friends With Benefits Movie Review

Review:

Saw this with my husband on “date night” without especially high expectations, but ended up really enjoying it. Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis had great chemistry and the script was crackling with energy and banter. Even the raunchy parts were kind of cute, thanks to some realistic awkwardness.

Bend It Like Beckham Movie Review

Review:

Bend It Like Beckham became a pretty much instant feel-good classic when it was released and remains funny and charming more than 10 years later. It’s a great girl power film as well.

Review:

Though not quite as consistent as Book 2, Book 3 is a strong and satisfying conclusion to the series, with many excellent episodes and an especially strong character arc for Zuko.

My favorite season of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Starting with the introduction of Toph in episode six, “The Blind Bandit,” the show knocks it out of the park with a string of almost unbroken awesome until the season finale.

Along with Toph, who is tied with Iroh as my favorite character in the show, the season also introduces Zuko’s badass sister Azula and her equally badass friends Mai and Ty Lee as new antagonists, cementing Avatar’s position as one of the best depictions of strong, complex, and diverse female characters on television.

Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 1 Review

Review:

Avatar: The Last Airbender is not just one of the best children’s tv shows I’ve ever seen, it’s one of the best tv shows, period. The worldbuilding and character development are amazing, the animation quality is good (and sometimes outstanding), and there’s an enjoyable blend of action, humor, adventure, and more.

I do consider Book One to be the weakest season overall, but it’s still highly enjoyable, for the whole family.

Enchanted Movie Review

Review:

Disney isn’t afraid to poke fun at itself! Enchanted is a charming and fun send-up of many of Disney’s stock tropes and cliches. Amy Adams is adorable as Giselle and Susan Sarandon looks like she’s having the time of her life as the wicked stepmother. I also loved James Marsden as the well meaning but hopelessly oblivious Prince Edward. My only question is why they hired a famous Broadway star like Idina Menzel and then never had her sing!

Stardust Movie Review

Review:

I saw Stardust for the first time without realizing that it was an adaptation of one of Neil Gaiman’s novels and didn’t really know what to expect. It charmed me completely with its blend of action, humor, romance, and high fantasy and is now a favorite. I’m really amazed that it wasn’t a bigger hit, and consider it one of the most under-rated fantasy films I’ve ever seen.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home Movie Review

Review:

My dad isn’t a Trekkie, but he is a Star Trek fan, and he tried to introduce my siblings and me to the series with slightly mixed success when we were kids. For example, we got sort of traumatized by the Ceti eel things in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (I didn’t attempt to watch that film again until I was an adult), but we absolutely loved Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. In fact, it became one of our favorite movies and we watched it many, many times as kids. It remains one of my favorite films to this day, and is definitely my favorite Star Trek movie. The Voyage Home is hilarious, highly quotable, and ultimately touching, as the crew of the Enterprise travels back in time to 1980’s San Francisco to bring back a pair of humpback whales in an attempt to repopulate the species (which has become extinct in the 23rd century). Also, I still kind of want to be Gillian Taylor.

Star Trek (2009) Movie Review

Review:

I wouldn’t describe myself as a Trekkie, but I do enjoy Star Trek, and like many fans more dedicated than myself, I have somewhat mixed feelings about this film.

On the one hand, it’s a lot of fun and I thought they did an excellent job with casting. Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and the rest all did a great job bringing a fresh energy to their characters without sacrificing familiarity.

On the other hand, it’s very flashy and pretty to look at without having much underneath. Large chunks of the plot and worldbuilding for the reboot are blatantly, almost insultingly, ridiculous.

In short, it’s a fun movie to curl up with on a rainy afternoon, but I hope in future that the reboot films will be taken over by someone with more respect for the soul of the original Trek. Meanwhile, the best thing about the reboot universe is the top-notch fanfiction it’s inspired.

A couple personal favorites:

Yeah, I like Uhura.

Easy A Movie Review

Review:

Another smart, witty teen movie in the tradition of Mean Girls, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Clueless, this one inspired by Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. It’s one of our favorites, probably second only to Mean Girls in its genre.
