I rate more on how much I like or dislike things than on their objective quality. For example, I can intellectually recognize that Ernest Hemingway is a brilliant writer of immense talent, but man, I just hate his books, so A Farewell To Arms gets 1 star and some other writers of considerably more pedestrian prose get 3, 4, or even 5, simply because I like them better.

That said, though I (like everyone else) have my share of guilty pleasures, I also value quality, in everything from my reading material to my chocolate to my kitchen gadgets, so if something is shoddily done, I generally won’t like it as much as something similar of higher quality.
