Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 2 Review

Season two might be my favorite season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’m always a little torn, because the bad episodes in season two were really, amazingly bad and I think some of the later seasons were more consistent overall.

But the good episodes were great, and the Angelus storyline starting in the final moments of Surprise is one of my favorites of the whole show. (I’ve never been much of a Buffy/Angel shipper, mainly because I always thought David Boreanaz was clearly having much more fun as Angelus.)

Another season two vampire bonus: Spike, when he was still un-chipped, un-souled, and cheerfully ripping out throats. \o/

My rating: (4 / 5)

Episode By Episode

2×01 When She Was Bad – A decent episode, but not as good as some of the ones that followed

2×02 Some Assembly Required – Terrible

2×03 School Hard – A thoroughly enjoyable introduction to one of my favorite characters: Spike! \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/

2×04 Inca Mummy Girl – Aaaaaand, we’re back to awful. It’s like the writers were taken over by pod people every other week.

2×05 Reptile Boy – Sometimes, the pod people struck every week. Egad, so bad.

2×06 Halloween – Yay, another good one! I absolutely loved the premise, which involved people becoming their Halloween costumes and unleashing mayhem on Sunnydale. Spike loved it, too.

2×07 Lie To Me – One of the better stand-alone eps of the season

2×08 The Dark Age – I forgot this episode existed until checking the episode list just now, so make of that what you will.

2×09 What’s My Line (Part 1) – Another good episode, as Buffy gets attacked by assassins from the Order of Taraka (including a totally gross bug guy) and meets the slayer who was called when she was killed by the Master back in “Prophecy Girl

2×10 What’s My Line (Part 2) – Also good

2×11 Ted – The pod people strike again

2×12 Bad Eggs – And again. ~sigh~

2×13 Surprise – A huge leap forward in quality as Buffy and Angel finally consummate their romance, activating the rest of the gypsy’s curse and promptly turning him back into the sadistic Angelus

2×14 Innocence – One of my favorite episodes of the whole show! Angelus teams up with Spike and Drusilla to waken an ancient demon known as the Judge, and Buffy goes the opposite of medieval on the demon’s ass.

2×15 Phases – Terrible special effects, but much Willow and Oz cuteness

2×16 Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered – Another of the better stand-alone eps of the season

2×17 Passion – Another episode that knocks it out of the park, as Angelus ups his game with one of the most heart-breaking deaths of the show

2×18 Killed By Death – One of the weaker episodes of late season two

2×19 I Only Have Eyes For You – Buffy and Angelus get possessed by the ghosts of a pair of tragic lovers from Sunnydale’s past

2×20 Go Fish – The pod people strike yet again. Seriously, folks, who thought this was a good idea?

2×21 and 2×22 Becoming, 1 & 2 – I have a hard time splitting these two up in my head, so I’ll just review them together. In a word – fantastic. Tense, well, acted, by turns hilarious and heart-breaking, and all around brilliant television, with one of the most powerful endings the show ever produced.
